Are You Into God…Or Is God Into You?
An editorial by Pastor Will Thomas
I recently saw an article where the Mayor’s of Pittsburgh and Denver had made a friendly bet (which normally happens as a gesture of goodwill among the two cities playing) for whichever team wins the game the losing Mayor will do something for the other Mayor.
Well, unless you have been living under a rock, you saw the thrilling overtime finish of the Denver Broncos win over the Pittsburgh Steelers to advance in the playoffs of the NFL. The Mayor of Pittsburgh to payoff his bet had to “Tebow” on a hill overlooking the City of Pittsburgh. Tebowing (for my less enthused sports fans) is when the Denver’s Quarterback (Tim Tebow) gets down on one knee to pray after each touchdown he throws or runs. Keep in mind professional sports players have been publicly displaying of their faith for years. Even Tim Tebow said in a recent article in the Wall Street Journal: “I don’t believe God cares who wins football games. But that He (God) would be glorified in all I say or do.”
I have played football for many years and on many levels (of course that was many years and many pounds ago!). I have never seen God talked about as much as I have in all my years being around sports as I have now. You have all the major media outlets talking about God. In barber shops folks are talking about God. In grocery stores folks are talking about God. Also everybody even seems to be wearing shirts and writing jingles about God. Personally for me, I have enjoyed all the conservation about God. But a friend of mine mentioned in a post recently on on social network: “with all the talk about God, while isn’t the world in an a better place?”
I thought about that for a moment and came up with this scripture and thought: “Having a form of Godliness, but denying the power thereof” (II Timothy 3:5). The thought was: “Are You Into God Or Is God Into You?” Talking about God these days seems to be the “in thing”. It takes however a little more conviction of the heart and discipleship to live it! Being a “BELIEVER” takes more than you talking about it; it takes living it.
The Bible declares in John 13:34 & 35 declares; “34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” When we are “Into God”, we love, accept and have conservation with folks when it’s convenient to love them. When God is “into Us”; We will prefer folks over ourselves and love them IN SPITE of themselves.
So as we live in a time of “Tebowing” (meaning publicly praying), I ask the rhetorical questions: “Are You Into God, or is God Into You!”? If the latter, then let’s began to make the world we effect (our sphere of influence) better by not just our talk, but by our deed.
