Dr. Juanita Bynum Typing in Tongues?

Filed under Church, Leaders, Ministry Updates, Technology

On August 17, on the Facebook Fan page named: http://www.facebook.com/DrJuanitaBynum and owned by “Juanita Bynum II” several strings of unintelligible letters were sparsed between what otherwise appeared to be a chain of intercessory prayer messages related to Dr. Zachery Timms and his church and family. See below:

and again…

Since then over 500 people have commented on the posts and the statements are primarily unflattering and range from very harsh to comical to corrective.

Have you seen the posts yet? Do you think this is the next iteration of tongues? What guidance does the Bible give us for addressing issues like this?

  1. Dumi Atum says:

Unfortunately, this sister has demonstrated for years that she has serious mental health issues, that are over looked because she is “anointed”. Its a sad commentary that this too will be repeated by weak minded women and other self proclaim prophetess. So sad

  2. Gail Rice says:

Why is this a news article…? There is so much more going on on the world.

  3. Rev. Dr. Hugh Anderson, II says:

STUPID! BIBLICALLY IGNORANT! Paul even criticizes speaking in tongues in Cor even in a church setting, especially if there is no interpreter–confusing for nonbelievers who may enter the worship service–and the appeal by him to seek a more excellent gift. I am a believer in “tongues”–and this is a broad area where I won[t go into detail right now–but this gift always has a possibility of being faked–or there is not a way to objectively test if it is authentic. I love Sister Bynam[s ministry, but I think that this instance of texting in tongues is ridiculous and even though supported by many, offers no positive spiritual value. It is bad enough to justify speaking in tongues orally, especially w/o an interpreter, than to confuse the gift further by this type of thing. One other thing, I can[t argue against her sincerity or honesty, but I am siding with the side of the Bible that when something is or may be confusing, just don[t do it!

  4. Debbie O says:

Who was being edified by Juanita’s babble? Did she give interpertation of her “tongue writing”? Here she go again…
Timms death is and will remain a mystery (like his life)…what is Juanita going to do…tongue out the truth. Sit down girl!

  5. Jay says:

This is the most stupidest thing I have heard of. She even has people “liking” this craziness on Facebook. Sad state of affairs for Ms. Bynum who is starving for any form of attention these days.

  6. Lillian Washington says:

Juanita Bynum could have excercised more maturity by maybe using a “…” or something of the nature to express times during her prayer in which she went into her prayer language. I do not believe she was trying to send a message in tongues but was only expressing that she was praying in tonugues. However, what she has done is now causing confusion and God is not the author of confusion. I believe her sincere desire was to pray for Dr. Tims, his family and church family. On a side note Dr. Bynum has done this on several occassions before and I believe it is getting the attention of everyone now because she was praying for Dr. Tims. Hopefully when she returns from Africa she will be able to address. Its a shame that we can waist time trying to determine what she actually meant if it was biblical or not while there are souls out there that need to be reached for Christ. When you read and look at the context of the rest of the praying she is simply praying…almost everytime you go into a church and hear people praying they speak (pray) in their prayer language….do we call all those people to the carpet….we need to have some level of mercy and since Dr. Bynum has done this online to the public she will have to address her intent. Until them we should keep praying for healing and restoration in the Body of Christ…we do more damage in the Kingdom senselessly ridculing each other. SN: I do understand that this could hurt the unbeliever, babe etc…however most of her FB friends are believers who pray in a the Holy Spirit in a prayer language that is not understood by the natural ear. Its is the believers that are highlighting things that would give an unbeliever a reason not to come into the fiath. For those of you who believe that she was trying to bring attention to herself…pray for her….we all fall short in this journey and we all have a lot to learn…Be Blessed!

  7. Ron P says:

Oh here we go again….. More Juanita Bynum bashing….. Please…. Give the woman a break! So what?! She types tongues on her Facebook page? What is so terrible about that? It’s not ending her or anyone else to Hell. If you don’t like what she does, pray for her…. But all the bashing, judging and telling her to sit down is what is ridiculous and hypocritical. I don’t exactly agree with the whole “typing in text” thing either but we really need to pray more for the woman of God.

  8. Tee says:

Really Gospel Today!!!! Are you really reporters of the gospel!! It seems like everything the world does the church finds itself doing!!! You can’t turn on the regular news because they report mostly trash and now look at us!! What souls are being won from this article period!!!

  9. askduane says:

Typing in so called tongues, what a joke, sad but true and she has foolish women that follow her. Someone once said; how can you spot a Jezebel? Her name came up as the answer.

  10. Elise says:

PA LEAASE!!!!!! I can’t even believe that this is GOSPEL TODAY MAGAZINE WORTHY!!!!!!!!!!! COME ON FOLKS!!!!! Is this a follow FACEBOOK AND TWITTER STATUS MAGAZINE or is this to communicate and promote KINGDOM!!!!!

  11. Smith says:

I think that all of us should consider the words of Paul in 1 Corinthians 14 for guidance on issues like this.

  12. admin says:

    Dear Readers,
Thank you for your comments on our blog! We welcome robust and thoughtful discussion here.

Gospel Today prizes our place as your Christian Lifestyle destination that brings you news and information on the people, events and topics that touch our community.

The topic of “tongues” though controversial, is an important topic in our communities of faith and when a person with a large following like Dr. Bynum makes news with a story such as this, we felt it was important to provide a space for a discussion that leads to understanding so that we may all think and act more in line with Scripture. We hope you will add your wisdom to this blog by answering the question: “What guidance does the Bible give us for addressing issues like this?”

Gospel Today is still and will always be about “informing, educating, inspiring and empowering our readers towards standards of Godly excellence.” Sometimes, that means talking about topics that seem trite to some and important to others.

    Respectfully,
    Roland Hairston.

  13. Victory says:

God knows my sister in Christ Heart! The heavenly languages are the languages that God confound at the Towel of Babel for the people on Earth. (Genesis 11:3-7) On the day of Pentecost the 120 in the Upper Room experienced the birthing of the languages by the Holy Spirit to speak in tongues.(Acts 2:1-12) I believe the letters that we see in the prayer are acronyms, N-Nurture & Nesting, B-Burden, Blood, G-God, V-Victory, T-Travail, D-Divine, C-Cover, L-Life, R-Reveal, F-Father, H-Heal, U- Union, RX- medical terminology, Physicians prescribes medications- Jesus is the great physician for healing wounded hearts!

  14. Rev. Dr. Hugh Anderson, II says:

Gospel Today is not at fault here. I appreciate your offering discussion on such an important issue and gift of manifestation of the Spirit.
For those who oppose wholesome biblical discussion on this subject, i.e. Ron P.. No one is trying to bash Sister Bynum, I am just simply interested in her not promoting something such as texting in tongues. It may send noone to hell, but it is certainly unsound scriptually, according to order. 1 Corinthians–it is important to do things decently and in order.

  15. Gail says:

The Bible certainly gives us direction on speaking/praying in the spirit, in tongues in public. Paul did not have Facebook in mind but it certainly fits in regards to being done in the public arena. We must ask ourselves, how does this edifying the body. How is anyone reading it edified? And who can interpret it? Interpretation is real. I’ve experienced it only once in my lifetime. I was so frightened by it that I didn’t know what to do with it at the time and didn’t know that I was supposed to speak what was said to those that were present. I have asked God for another opportunity to experience it but so far he has not granted it.
In private, one can write and string together as many unintelligible letters as they want and speak in an unintelligible language as much as they want because it’s between them in God. We must be careful and mindful of what we do so as we are not viewed as crazy. That’s what the Bible says. That being said, read the posts again and decide for yourselves. Honestly, had I read those posts unconnected to this article, I would have thought her hands had inadvertently been positioned on the wrong keys.

  16. Lamario Stripling says:

I would like to thank Gospel Today for bringing this issue to light. Since Dr. Bynum performed this in a very open forum, it is appropriate for you to bring this issue to light. I agree with Lillian Washington in that our focus should be on winning the lost and healing the wounds in the body of Christ at large. However, there are things which are done like this that demand attention. This is an issue that has the potential to cause more damage than good. Paul reminded us in 1st Corinthians that tongues should be interpreted by someone other than the one speaking in tongues. I do understand the concept of prayer language, which she be kept to oneself and not issued in a public forum. Unless Dr. Bynum has an interpreter, then she was operating outside of the confounds of what the Bible says. We all error. Paul said for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. I think this places Dr. Bynum in a place to repent and to help others understand the spiritual gifts.

I would love to see Gospel Today publish an article on the spiritual gifts along with its correct application in today’s society with a special emphasis on tongues.

  17. Temitayo London says:

Rev. Dr. Hugh Anderson, II . You? a Reverend? Critising your sister in the lord on a public website? Shameful. Why have you majored on the minor? how come you didn’t take into account the fact that this woman is interceeding and encourage others to intercede and thank God for raising an intercessor. If you were an intercessor, you wont be able to criticise those who intercede. Shes praying for a church and encouraging others to dos so? why are u criticising her? I suggest you apologise to this woman who you have bashed openly on a public website. Its totally unacceptable. This is your sister in the Lord washed in the same blood of Jesus and here you are joining the multitude to do evil. Not acceptable. Besides is this the first time some one is writing in a heavenly language? Mene Mene terkel persin? is that an earthly language? Don’t do it reverend. Let us even say, Dr. Bynum is wrong writing in tongues which she is not but does that give you a right to bash a servant of the Lord on a public website. OR is it just that you have a problem with female preachers???

  18. Rev. Dr. Hugh Anderson, II says:

@Timitayo London. My remarks have nothing to do with Sis bynum being a woman–the same would have true to my statement if it had been a man. I can appreciate your sensitivity to Sis Bynum, but I do not apologize for this at all. In fact, I wholeheartedly and emphatically still say that her act was out of order, and a purveyor of stupidity–unsound biblically. This act was made public by her, so I discuss it publically. The mention of mene mene…from Daniel if not a recognizable language, but there was an interpretation by Daniel. By the way, you bash me for so-called bashing Sis Bynum. So, you BASH ME! That’s alright! But, I approach this matter Biblically–that[s all. I have followed and love her ministry for years, and earnestly pray for her continued ministry success. She doesn[t know me personally, but I have written her concerning my praying for her, etc. But, this matter is one that needed to be voiced openly because it was made public.

  19. Pastor L. Melendez says:

To all that responded..While we sit and make comments about this issue..Who is getting the glory? While the body of christ is sitting like infant babies with pacifers in their mouths complaining..The “DEVIL” is just having a field day at these remarks, and escorting the unsaved to hell..Stop the madness now..and get on your post and “SAVE SOULS”..IN JESUS NAME!!!!! STOP WASTING TIME..GET ON ONE ACCORD NOW….

  20. Bpraise517 says:

Why is it when in the church do wrong ….other christian justify their behavior with the dont judge clause…when judgement starts in the House of God…SOmetimes wrong is simply wrong

  21. Sharon says:

Juanita!!!! Use the forum u need to use to Promote God! Sister this is your journey & NO ONE can judge you! Your tongue interpretation may have been the fruit that a baby needed to get her tongue! Allow the spirit to use you my sister….In Jesus Name you prayed & In Jesus Name I MUST respect!! It saddens my heart how EVERYTHING pertaining to Jesus is scrutinized by fellow christians! While we are bashing Juanita let’s transcribe some of the music are kids are listening too & rebuke those spirits in the name of Jesus! Juanita keep being unique, reachable, & anointed! Your journey is not ours to judge!

  22. Zion says:

@Temitayo London, you are a wise’virgin’ while the church awaits her bridegroom, its disappointing to know that someone who is supposed to know better doesnt. What can you say? Titles/church positions will not get anyone to heaven neither judging others when we CLEARLY might not understand the issue. The reason why some so-called xtian are bitter, malicious and murderous is jealousy, envy, discontentment and inferiority complex towards pple passionately following God to fulfill their destiny.
Am glad that God SEES and HEARS!!! : )

  23. Jackie says:

And what is wrong with her doing so?The worldly people speak there untamed tongues. Saying all kinds of foolishness where the spirit of the Lord is there will aiways be liberty.

  24. Jackie says:

    always Lol!! my bad!!

  25. Shantel Williams says:

I don’t know what to say about this. this is disgraceful… The Bible speaks about false prophets and people coming in the name of the Lord. I really don’t follow her too much anymore because I went to one of her conferences in Florida. It was so much religious practices in that place…. and I say that because when service was over, she had that nastiest attitude.. and even all of the attendees. People speak in their so called tongue that everybody is saying, and then when they get up from the floor from passing out, and having their “convulsions” as my pastor says, the music stops and no one is looking anymore, they are so nasty and disrespectful! I went out to eat with my sister and saw people in the restaurant from the conference. They were so nasty to us it wasn’t funny! Then, you had the place were all of these books, videos, and religious items were being purchased. Why? I remember the Lord telling the disciples not to take any money for preaching God’s word! Really, where is all of this money from the conference fees, all of the videos and prayer cloths going? When you try to speak to people like this after service is over, they look down on you as if you are a peasant! I am so sick and tired of all of this mello drama that the religious community is giving.. Now, I know why the Bible speaks about the great falling away.. the saints are going to get tired of the same mess, and just fall away… it is so sad!

  26. Well, maam! Your assignment is to pray for those people. Allow God to have his way. That way you will not cause them any harm; because hurt people hurt others. I know this a concern of yours, but LET GO AND LET GOD! GOD also speaks, “CAUSE MY PROPHET NO HARM.” SO JUST TAKE IT TO OUR LORD! MAY GOD BLESS YOU!

  27. Mary says:

Ok all yall who so heavenly mind till you ain’t no earthly good!!!

Anyone who knows Dr. Bynum (no, let’s back that thang up)….anyone who knows GOD first of all, knows that Dr. Bynum is anointed, called and sent by God. Secondly, anyone with a HALF grain of godliness in them would have better sense than to voice a nasty, negative opinion about a SERVANT of God whether YOU feel like they’re right with God or NOT, and lastly, anyone who REALLY knows Dr. Bynum knows that she is a down to earth, in-your-face, tell-it-like-it-is-with-no-sugar-coating kind of woman AND prophet! And, she has a sense of humor that can make a DOG laugh! That’s if you really knew Dr. Bynum.

Not much has changed since the Old Testament was given to us; people reject and set out to kill God’s prophets today, just like the people of God rejected and tried to kill the prophets of old. You may not seek to have them put to death, but you SURE use that murderous tongue of yours like a machete!! I don’t know WHAT kind of generation of Believers THIS is…..just NO respect, not an OUNCE of reverential fear for God and for His Spirit that dwells in others – just say ANYTHING out of your perverse lips with NO conviction….don’t even have enough Holy Ghost in you to teach you to hold your peace so you can be COUNTED as wise, though in reality you’re ignorant and foolish! Something struck me last night as I was reading about how the children of Israel cried for a king, when Samuel got up in age. And the REASON they wanted a king was because Samuel SONS whom he had put in power, were walking contrary to law of God – taking bribes and perverting justice. It hit me like a slap in the face that it UPSET God when the people demanded to REPLACE Samuel’s sons, EVEN THOUGH GOD KNEW THEY WERE DOING WICKEDNESS!!! The same theme is repeated between David and Saul. David knew better than to raise his hand, his foot OR his mouth against Saul, even though Saul was trying to KILL him! That’s what you call “A CLUE” as to how God views rejection and uprising against authority figures that HE has allowed to be appointed, whether they use their power for good or for evil!!!

The Biblical ignorance of Believers is REALLY highlighted when something so simple as an expression of excitement (which by the way is an inside, joy expression between Dr. Bynum and her children) that none of yall would have ever known about, if you would just get out of her BUSINESS! Just NOSEY…can’t stop CRITICIZING her, but can’t stop FOLLOWING her! That’s tragic! If you had been out building up YOUR global ministry, you would have never happened upon our brand of in-house humor! As the old folk used to teach US, “Keep your behind in your OWN house” and leave all of us “Bynamites” ALONE!!! Trust, we ain’t following up behind YOUR pastor! ATALL!!`
    `
If gambling were spiritually legal I’d be willing to WAGER that these same jokas who so ‘offended’ by Dr. Bynum’s “written tongues,” play-play “speak in tongues” among their circle of friends and fellow church members all of the time! (And if they don’t do that they SURE do other things that mimic the joy of their Christian Experience) unless of course they’re dead!!!! (I been in Holiness too LONG for yall to fool ME)!!!

You all are living proof that the Word, the concepts and the precepts that Dr. Bynum teaches are sound, life-giving and true. She taught us how to judge who needs to “get a life.” It’s the people who doggedly, RELENTLESSLY, criticize and follow the lives and movements of people that they can’t get along with, and/or disapprove of!

    Selah.

You all are just like the people (ESPECIALLY “US)who dog people like Oprah and Tyler Perry; people who are broke as a JOKE, punching a clock every day, living from pay check to pay check but trust to have their mouths on people whose names and legacies are all over the world! That’s ignorance and idiocy in the HIGHEST form!!!

Who will remember YOU when YOU’RE gone? And for what will you be remembered? Raising the dead ? (Like Dr. Bynum) Humbling yourself before millions when you “miss it?” (Like Dr. Bynum) Being the first to teach AND demonstrate the relevance of Biblical Types such as “the ark of the covenant,” “the significance of the altar,” and “the priesthood” to international audiences in anointed but plain language? Being the first African American woman to pack out AND PAY FOR the Georgia Dome with her first conference? (Like Dr. Bynum) Being known as “The Empress of Prayer”? (Like Dr. Bynum)

    I’m w-a-i-t-i-n-g……..

If the spirit, attitudes and mindsets on this post are any indication of what you bring to the Kingdom, excuse me while I drop to my knees, raise my hands and offer up a praise to the Father, for never having to suffer the embarrassment of making your acquaintance. If we don’t soon change, The Philadelphia Church is sure to testify against us!

  28. Deborah says:

Unfortunately, we all are subject to error. Prophetess is no exception. Our personal spiritual language is between us and the Lord. While any open utterance is given for edification. Facebook is an opportunity to communicate to many with one stroke. Same as the pulpit. We need to use our platform responsibly and to concern ourselves with who is being edified by what we say and do. We should never take it personal when error is established. We should be thankful that God loves us so much, that He would not allow us to remain ignorant. So let’s be serious; which one of us understand or could interpret typing in tongues. Let us pray!

  29. Rev. Dr. Hugh Anderson, II says:

Prophet or no prophet, any human being is subject to make mistakes and is not infallible. She was wrong and all who cant see that is not thinking rationally concerning this matter other than just looking at the personality. She is a charismatic personality, but still can be wrong whether the anointed one or not. This is absolutely all I am going to say on this matter at this time. @mary and Yolanda–being a prophet does not preclude us from saying anything when we consider a person to be in error. No one is infallible, I don[t care if they are a bishop. I have heard some of them make mistakes. And, again, I say the church has a right to tactfully and lovingly call anyone into question–in a respectable manner.

  30. Bishop Geraldine Moore says:

    AMEN! Rev. Dr. Hugh Anderson.

  31. Bishop Geraldine Moore says:

My only comment was AMEN to the statements made by Rev. Hugh Anderson not “your comment is awaiting moderation.

  32. Xavier says:

Quit hateing on ms.bynum wow how many demons do we have in the church go hate on these its on dancing with the stars and remember moses brother and sister were saved and judgement came on them for hating there may b a greater level u havent reached yet.I think she wasnt being spooky r crazy I love u ms.bynum god bless.

  33. Rickey says:

Lillian Washington, I totally agree. On another note, folks shouldn’t amplify something so minute. There are always going to be “haters”. Of course, the enemy uses media to twist things and stir up arguments, strife, etc. & it’s past the time for Christians to grow the heck up. Folks are spending more time listening to media than God. They are reading more articles than they are the bible. That is a sad thing too. That’s why there are so many disagreements in churches. People need to get in the Bible for themselves.

  34. Flutterby says:

I find it incredibly disheartening that so many follow leaders more than God himself–so much so that they would completely ignore the word just to defend a leader. As it has been posted a few times above, no leader is infallible and if we are not allowed to discuss public issues that affect the body as a whole, then how will we protect each other from wolves? This is how scams, abuse (including sexual), heresy etc is allowed to spread in the churches because people are silent and others are angry towards those that are willing to use the brain they were born with. It’s called critical thinking, people…if you are too spiritual to think, then you are in a cult like, idol worshiping, Spirit ignoring mindset. Just saying…

  35. G says:

Whew! I guess I should be happy that we are Christians that have each others back. Hmmmmmmm : (

  36. Shantel Williams says:

I agree with Flutterby! I have know saints who will do anything to defend a leader, even when they were wrong. I have also seen leadership disrespect people who do not follow their words or philosophies… it is so sad! Yes we need to pray, but not pray for the devil to get off of the people of God… if you are a true woman or man of God, why would the devil even take presidence in your body? Please wake up everyone and realize that Leaders are not God! That is probably why God is going to start with the church as far as making corrections because we should know better! First of all, prayer is supposed to be done behind closed doors! Facebook is a public domain where anybody can see it! People who are saved and not saved looked at that and could not tell what that was! How can anybody interpret tongues from a computer when computers where not out back in Biblical days! Also, you never heard of tongues being recorded in the Bible! it was always a conversation between you and God! Tongue speaking is sacred and it should stay that way! We as Chrisitans are not supposed to make God’s word or the body of Christ look like a “three ring” circus. It is too many people in the media and on the subways making fun of Chrisitans. Why? we make those practices amusing to people. I know this lady that used to ride the train and she was saying scriptures from the Bible. She was okay until she started to shake and tremble. She did not hold on to the pole and the train was moving. She started saying a “tongue” and walked through the train from left to right. She was falling all over the place and people were laughing at her because she was shaking her dress and it was going up and down. Sometimes people do some silly practices and call it “God working”. it is so sad! I learned about tongues from my mother. She said that tongues is a dialog.. that means that it sounds like words, not the same word repeated, or people mimic other tongue speakers. Often people say they are speaking in tongues to someone and be prophetic at the same time. many times the things they say are not God at all, it is them. It is just so much to say on this topic, it is giving me a headache just thinking about it…

  37. Faith says:

Acts 2:4-8 (4)And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues,as the Spirit gave them utterance. (8) And how hear we every man in our own tongue, werein we were born? “Tongues” are a Language that is interpeted to give warning, edification and praise. If there is no interpetation then let that person pray or “write” in silence to GOD.
