Obama: The Anti-Marriage President

February 28, 2011 by

By Harry R. Jackson, Jr.

The President’s announcement, Wednesday, February 23rd, that he will no longer defend the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was shocking to millions of Americans. Yet his timing was not just an act of personal conscience, it was done in concert with the deliberations of the Maryland State Senate which meets in Annapolis less than a 45 minute drive from the White House. His statement was timed to say to ambivalent senate members that there would be “political cover” from the Justice Department and the oval office if they legalized same-sex marriage.

Predictably, many wavering Maryland state senators were emboldened to vote to change the definition of marriage, despite the fact that most Marylanders are only in favor of traditional marriage. These lawmakers, like those in the state of Maine a couple of years ago, have been masterfully lobbied by same-sex marriage activists in military-like precision. Both the carrot and the stick have been masterfully used in Maryland, resulting in some legislators believe that they are making “history” while others are simply attempting to hang on to their seats. Therefore, the very next day — Thursday, February 24th (one week after Valentine’s Day) — the undecideds and fence-sitters simultaneously “caved in,” passing a same-sex marriage bill in their senate.

The decision of the president to halt the enforcement of DOMA will have other effects as well. Immediately, it will prevent 5 cases, which are in the wings, from having the protection they rightfully should have. More specifically, Attorney General Holder wrote to congressional leaders that President Obama has instructed that the defense of DOMA should be withdrawn immediately in two pending cases: Pedersen v. Office of Personnel Management (United States District Court for the District of Connecticut) and Windsor v. United States of America (United States District Court for the Southern District of New York). This means these cases may be adjudicated unfairly because of the bias of the nation’s highest level “prosecutors.”

The justification for the president’s interference with the due process of law is his belief that the law is “unconstitutional.” The irony of this analysis is that the administration is violating constitutional responsibility to uphold the laws of the land. Worse than the mere abdication of responsibility is the fact that the president is manipulatively eviscerating the legislative branch of the government, while preventing the constitutional operation of the judicial system. For someone who complained about his predecessor over-reaching the powers of the office, President Obama seems to have lost respect for his “political bible” — the constitution. He obviously feels he can play with its meaning and abridge the rights of one group in order to advance the “rights” of another.

This change in policy is echoes the actions of southern prosecutors during the height of the civil rights movement when they refused to prosecute the people who lynched and tortured blacks. The injustice was so bad in the ’50s that men like my father were threatened, beaten, or worse just for attempting to register blacks to vote and exercise other constitutional rights. In the spirit of Bull Connor of old, the president seems willing to violate the constitution when it suits his purposes and his vision for America. He was not given an electoral mandate for his current course in America. The nation expected a bridge-building advocate who would bring a higher, more noble spirit to the Oval Office.

Whatever happened to the idea of serving the people?

The public is obviously supportive of equal rights for gay; 60% of them even were in favor of reversing “don’t ask, don’t tell.” The public, however, is not in favor of gay marriage as a civil rights issue. Therefore, they do not want it changed. The president who claims to be a “unifier” of people is choosing to impose his will on the people instead of taking the time and energy to create “change” the true constitutional way.

I agree with Texas Representative Lamar Smith who said, “This is the real politicization of the Justice Department — when the personal views of the president override the government’s duty to defend the law of the land.” In light of decisions like these, people from all walks of life are wondering, Just what are the president’s core values? Matt Staver of the Liberty Council made the following statement, “Today President Obama has abandoned his role as President of the United States and transformed his office into the President of the Divided States. He has been the most divisive president in American history.” I believe Staver’s words are true.

An equally important observation is the fact that President Obama may go down in history as the Anti-Marriage President. Despite his Fatherhood Initiative and his emphasis on developing strong families, he has chosen to aggressively support public policies concerning marriage which would destroy the foundation of the institution. Marriage, at its root, is not an individual civil right to be enjoyed by all. It is, however, an ancient institution which must be preserved and promoted. The president’s claim that the DOMA legislation is unconstitutional is no more than a crass political move to garner the support of his ardent followers in the radical gay community. What the president has obviously not taken into consideration is: 1.) the impact that legalizing same-sex marriage nationally will have on the education and socialization of primary school children, 2.) the impact of the legalization of same-sex marriage upon the unions in the black and Hispanic communities, and 3.) the long term, political consequences to his 2012 campaign of showing the hypocrisy of the pro-marriage statement he made in the 2008 race.

It’s time for people of all races to rise up and let their voices be heard. If you disagree with the president about marriage, call and/or e-mail your congressmen and senators. Let them know that you expect them to protect marriage, the sanctity of human life, and freedom of religion.

President Obama’s apparent opposition to traditional marriage and rejection of his constitutional responsibilities as President should be evidence that he is not acting in the best interest of our country. His 2008 campaign was a sham. No Bible-believing Christians, especially Black people, should give him another four years in 2012. Quit giving him a pass.

  2. We are in The Final Hours before the coming of The Lord. We need to truly Pray & seek the Lord and the real Church needs to stand up and be the Church . Its a Dark World and Pastors need to be True lights & voices for Jesus .. There was a time our Elected Officials & The World would fear the Church& The Lord to make these calls. Over all ,the Church has become powerless & a laughing stock to the World. A remnant of us as Pastors & Churches are praying to be a good light for Jesus.

  3. Freda says:

Divide and conquer. I don’t support gay rights but I do support President Obama. Many past presidents have done things that did not have majority approval, but their people still supported them. GW made a mess of our country during his first term and they re-elected him to turn the mess into a bigger mess. I continue to pray for God’s wisdom and guidance for our President and his administration. No matter what happens, God will have the final Word.

  4. Angie says:

I really don’t care what the president says the bible says every knee will bow to the name of Jesus I am not going to judge the president his heart is still for the traditional marriage. All of a sudden gay marriage is the big headliner and the people of the DMV think they have to go along with it. Take a stand or we will fall. Remember what happened before when people started doing all kinds of things outside of God’s will, God said he would give them the reward they so richly deserve.

  5. Mary says:

As I read this, my heart aches. We are just about at the last of what few values we had left. We know the Lord is coming soon. We are allowing people to do and say whatever they want and to use any means to get what they want. As leader of our nation, the president should stand up and say this is not of God. How can we ask God to bless a nation that is so far away from his will that it would take more than a magnifying glass to find the few who are walking with God…Hmmm..Does this sound like Sodom and Gomarrah. We are headed for destruction and soon.

  6. Bishop Walter Barnes,III says:

What we need to do now is PRAY.

  7. Patrick Fleming says:

Washington DC, where Bishop Jackson pastors is in a state of demise. Teenage pregnancy the highest in the nation. Seventy-percent of all black women will never be married, because of a lack of trust in black men. Where is the Bishops bull horn on these matters? He is silent.
Fifty percent of all marriages end in divorce, so why would anybody, in their right mind oppose people the right to marry whom they please?
When it comes to gay people, people like Pastor jackson are encouraged because it makes them feel important, I suppose? As though they are a voice in the wilderness crying out for righteousness, but less we forget, the funds they receive from the Republicans for touting their agenda of exclusivity, lines their pockets.
All of this attention to what is an American right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, while our community suffers from poverty, nihilism and a lack of the church caring for those who are less fortunate, which is their commission from Jesus, reflects a misplaced sense of value. What about the souls that are being lost?
The church, the Christian church has become an exclusive club, for those who have become the judges of what they deem acceptable to the God they serve. They now are paying a price for their exclusive, bigoted attitudes.
For the 1st time in American history, people are not returning to the church during a recession. In fact Bishop TD Jakes has gone from 3 services to 1, and if u look at his telecasts, u can still find a seat.
Mega church parking lots are mostly empty where I live, and when we look across the nation the shift is apparent and startling. Why is this happening?
Younger people no longer want to be a part of an organization that excludes people because of their differences. Twenty-five percent of all 19 to 30 year old individuals have no intention of ever attending or joining a church. They still believe in God, but the church is the last place they expect to find Him. Without young people, what is the fate and future of the church? Is God love or not?
Bishop Jackson in his zeal, is helping to seal the fate of the church in America, which is vastly resembling the churches in Europe, empty.

  8. Erica Henry says:

I’m going to continue to pray for the President who proclaims Jesus Christ to receive wisdom from on High and not the world. Clearly, his decisions do not reflect his profession of being a believer of Jesus Christ! The line between “worldly” thinking and that of Gods peoples has become so blurred that many christians will not even see anything WRONG with this decision!! God will only heal this land when those of us who are called begin to humble ourselves and pray – turn from our wicked ways and pray!!! God Bless America!!

  9. Milton Brown Jr. says:

Once again we the American people forget to pray for those in authority, as the Word of God say’s “The kings heart is in the hand of the Lord,…….He turns it wherever He wishes”.Proverbs 21:1 The President obviously feels in his mind that he’s doing the right thing. Though his decision goes against the Word of God.People just seem to forget what happened to Sodom & Gomorrah or they think that God has changed His mind about Sin.Yeah, I know God is Love,& He Love’s His creation, but sin is unacceptable in my life & anybody else before God.All due respect to the President of the United States of America, but he ain’t The Lord God Almighty, who judges in righteousness!!!

  10. Shantel Williams says:

I don’t always like to comment on this subject because the church cannot always tell who is who! I have seen people come in the church and put on a show, speak in a tongue, not the holy language, wear the best clothes, and are taking our children and teaching them same sex ways! How dare these people come in the presence of God and act like they do! It is not funny and so many people are leaving the house of God because now Gay activity is being accepted in the church! I am very concerned as a teacher the curriculum for sex education with our young children. All Children go through puberty! How can you tell a little boy when he starts to hit puberty, that he must have feeings for a man! and what about the laws of procreation? It is a shame that we are the species that God gave dominion of the earth! Even the animals know that they are suppose to mate with the opposite sex! Why are we being disobedient to the laws of nature, which is what God put in place! Shame, nothing but shame.. especially on leadership (President and all others)

  11. June says:

I am not surprise at what the President is allowing. Let us remember Sodom and Gorma, well look were this world is heading. We need to seek God for wisdom daily, and pray for those including the President daily. We are living in the last days. Satan is taking anyone that will follow him to hell. We all have to give account to God including President Obama.

  12. We must pray for our President and the people in the White House. Actually we need to PRAY for all people. The Lord sees it all and He will take care of it.

  13. James Steward says:

I can only agree with the Bible and it is right. Same Sex marriage is a no no. We are going against the cammandment of God. Our country was founded on the word of God. Have we strayed so far from the word that we are now letting everything go on just to satisfy a few folk who want to do what they want to do? God FORBID! You are either a man or a woman. All this other stuff is what folk want to do and want to be. He made us ,male and female and that was it! Bottom line! Nothing in between!. Those of you who allow such to go on God will deal with you. Be careful what you let come into play just for popularity. There is a price that will be paid.

  14. J Alan Neal says:

It is imperative that the throats of our Prophets be cleared and cleared now! The body of Christ can not continue to standby and allow its leaders to keep leading them to the slaughter. Many church leaders in America are hidding behind Church vs State as to not be clear about what they truly believe. Every semi-informed Pastor knew exactly what President Obama stood and stands for. Now I am receiving tons of correspondence requesting prayer for “Change”. In fairness to our President, he did not lie or deceive – “He told the truth” He said, “We will Change America.” Why would a person jump into a pool of flamable liquid, strike a match, and then beg a bystander to call the Fire Department? Because the “Black Church” wanted a Black President they compromised the principles of God and completely blocked their ears to His Holy Word! “Black Church” leaders repent – you will be held accountable!

  15. Will says:

Is anybody surprised? I hope not. He ran on a platform of “hope and change”. Well, here is your change! All he is doing is fulfilling his campaign promise to his liberal base. Elections have consequences and this is what we are reaping. Serves us right when we vote for someone just because he is black and makes preachy speeches. And I agree with the first poster that you need to stop trying to protect him and call a spade a spade. He is not a true believer due to his universal beliefs. You can not think that all roads lead to heaven and claim that Christianity is just one of those roads to get you there. That is called universalism and is in stark contrast to the exclusivity of Christ our lord. Truthfully, I pray that God does save B.O.from the penalty of his sins, because his actions are demonstrating something completely different. Please, open your eyes and see what this man really is, a lost man who need the True and Living God and not the so-called “savior” of our country. put your hope and faith in the true King and not in this fallible man.

  16. I found the framing of the argument is erroneous . He,The President did not say he was not going to enforce the law. He said the they would no longer argue it in court . There is a difference.
I don’t think Our community has enough marriages ,our greater than 70% of our Children are born without the benefit of married (to each other) parents. The Government should not be telling any one who they cannot marry. That was done already and it was wrong. At that time it was race ,inter-racial , marriage.
God has made us all in His image and He will defend His word. We need to get Government out of our daily lives as monitors and decision makers , they are inadequate and sinners themselves.

  17. Victoria J says:

What is appalling to me is that some Christians see President Obama’s nod to civil rights and the probable unconstitutionality of DOMA as him not being a supporter of “traditional marriage”. Hogwash.

Gay marriage, civil unions or whatever means two same sex adults find to pledge their love for each other has NO bearing on a man and woman’s marriage. Its ridiculous and embarrassing that anyone in this day and age thinks this way. Actually, I remember racists talking the same way about interracial marriage. They thought it would destroy Christian society as they knew it.

Why in the world do Americans think an institution that is practiced worldwide by billions of people needs government protection? I would think people of faith and good heart would want basic civil rights to count more than the ginned up DOMA. I think straight and gay persons are very attuned to destroying their own relationships without help from anyone. So to me this is all reactionary fuss—.

Homophobia is ugly and beneath us all. But its funny how many of us cleave onto it the way
some in our society used to cleave unto racism.

  18. Minister Gerald M. Palmer, MSW says:

Well my friends, as many religious folk like Rev. Harry Jackson Jr. circle the wagons around marriage and point their rifles of self righteousness at the LGBTQ community; the real enemies of marriage are wreaking havoc.
Here is a list of the Enemies of Marriage!!!!

    • Lack of commitment to the marriage
    • Lack of communication between spouses
    • Infidelity
    • Abandonment
    • Alcohol Addiction
    • Substance Abuse
    • Physical Abuse
    • Sexual Abuse
    • Emotional Abuse
    • Inability to manage or resolve conflict
    • Personality Differences or ‘irreconcilable differences’
    • Differences in personal and career goals
    • Financial problems
    • Different expectations about household tasks
    • Different expectations about having or rearing children
    • Interference from parents or in-laws
    • Lack of maturity
    • Intellectual Incompatibility
    • Sexual Incompatibility
    • Insistence of sticking to traditional roles and not allowing room for personal growth
    • Falling out of love
    • Religious conversion or religious beliefs
    • Cultural and lifestyle differences
    • Inability to deal with each other’s petty idiosyncrasies
    • Mental Instability or Mental Illness
    • Criminal behavior and incarceration for crime

Hey I have a bright and brilliant idea.

Why don’t we go after the real enemies of marriage and families?

    How about drug addiction?

    How about poverty?

Oh how about helping couples to deal with some of the past pains that they bring into the marriage; such as unaddressed emotional trauma from sexual and emotional abuse.

The Religious Right Got It Rong. (And yeah I spelled it wrong on purpose).

  19. LB Perry says:

First, I do pray for our President and I leave the outcome in the hands of our Lord. However, as a human being I stand up for “Marriage” between a man and a woman, which God, Himself created from the beginning. Before I allow my grandchildren to be taught those immoral ways in school, I will help my children withdraw them from their schools and assist with home schooling. Shame on you Mr. President. Are you going to allow your daughters school to to teach your girls that it’s okay to have a girlfriend and that she can marry “her” when she is older? Jesus is still on the throne and he sees the wickedness of our country. Again, Shame on you Mr. President.

  20. Found you on google. Great article. Keep up the good work.

  21. Reginald Lee says:

Marriage is an institution ordain of God. What God has join together let no man put asunder. It is one thing to respect the rights of others to live as they please. But the rights of Holy Matrimony are divinely given by God. Therefore, let us work to keep marriage a union between a man an a woman. This is the union that God as promised to bless.
